I was attending a funeral nearby Hollywood of a close friend and a province mate who recently passed away earlier this month and happened to be with one of the recipients of such award when I saw the photo of this recipient-friend published in your paper recently which was also circulated via the internet dated June 29, 2012. The recipient whom is a very close friend of mine informed me that he was telephoned for such award and towards the end of the telephone conversation, he was informed that he could mail the $1,000 donation. My friend informed me then that he was still undecided but may have somehow given his unofficial decision but would have to discuss first with his wife.

During the internment that one morning there was lots of time to chat, my friend asked me what my opinion on such scheme and told him to save his money. That I could buy him a plaque perhaps with even mind-boggling praises if he so desires and the varnished wood would have cost mere forty five bucks or less and to hang it in his bathroom. Only to see my friend included in the photo you have published few days ago.

Accordingly, my friend is on a business trip and will have a chat over coffee upon his return. And his wife will be present in that coffee time and presuming she may have been against it, the coffee might taste even more bitter. But, the couple is the loveliest of pairs I have come know in the greater LA and the privilege being their friend.

It's the same old story involving those pseudo-Fil-Am organizations that raise funds under false pretenses. We have them all over the United States and even north of the border.

I'm not saying all of them but, when it comes to the Almighty dollar they'll do everything to get it.

When people ask them to provide statements of receipts and disbursements and the net proceeds, which fundraisers are legally and morally obligated to provide, the fundraisers are bound to raise hell or make a lot of outrageous excuses to avoid accounting of funds that could have already found their way into their own pockets.

What gives?

Is Darna Umayam telling the truth? Here is the comment of Dionesio Grava to Darna Umayam's comment.

Ms. Umayam wrote: "Mr. Grava never went to my house to interview me." I went to Ms. Umayam's house but I didn't say I interviewed her. On
Sat, 16 Jun 2012 11:27:48 -0400 I sent her an email
that I will see her that day and "I hope I can have a list of names of your 100 Outstanding Filipino Americans in the USA 2012, which I requested in the past. My boss, Atty. Bander, also wants to share that list for a story he is also writing." I suppose you were not there when I arrived because you wrote back that you "will be out attendimg birthday parties."

In that same email she said that "I can't give out names for now because that is what is agreed by the committee and for confidentiality because some of the awardees does not want any publicity at all. We respect that. We signed with them a 'Hold Harmless Acgreement'..."

On June 21, 2012, I wrote to Ms. Umayam: "Kindly be informed that I've been assigned to write about the above indicated topic for the coming issue of PinoyWatchdog. I have become aware of conflicting claims about the event between you and Atty. Bander. This letter is respectfully sent in my capacity as a community reporter and to solicit your side of this developing controversy." I thanked Ms. Umayam for the prompt response to that email. I submitted the Question-Answer results to PinoyWatchdog.
